Mayo Clinic Well-Being is an innovative cancer study built on Apple’s ResearchKit framework. This study aims to uncover novel ways of measuring the emotional and physical well-being of cancer patients, using technologies in their pockets and on their wrists.

For cancer providers, one key to delivering best-of-class care is to understand how patients are coping with treatments — including complex surgeries and chemotherapies that can take a financial, emotional and spiritual toll. Today, standard practice for assessing well-being and quality of life means asking cancer patients to complete lengthy paper questionnaires during already-lengthy appointments. These paper surveys are tedious and time-consuming, and they don’t always provide an accurate account of everyday life at home between appointments. Our cancer patients deserve better.

We are excited about the power of mobile technologies and connected devices to transform how we collect critical data about well-being during active cancer treatment and follow-up. We believe the iPhone and Apple Watch may prove to be better, more convenient tools for capturing real-time, meaningful data that could lead to advances in the care and well-being of cancer patients.

Eligibility:
The 300 participants in this study are adults with lymphoma, multiple myeloma, brain, breast or pancreatic cancer who are current patients at the Mayo Clinic Hematology and Medical Oncology outpatient practice in Rochester, Minn. No additional study participants are being accepted at this time.
